Day 25

The Long Trail West

We left Harrisburg yesterday at around 2:30 or 1430 for you military types who will better appreciate our latest adventure.  Our first overnighter on the train. Everyone has seen a railroad Pullman or sleeper car in the old movies. Wonderful, luxurious, comfortable, spacious, elegant  HaHaHoHoHehe....

Behold the modern Superliner Roomette

Absolutely guaranteed to provide 4 star accommodations for the  average
Lizard.

Needless to say Lady Wanda got a wonderful nights sleep. Bruce and I rested. Fortunately for Bruce the upper rack came complete with a seat belt to arrest any sudden drop in sleepature.

Please note that all of the above pictures were taken from out in the hallway as there wasn't enough room to stand and take them once the beds are made up.
Wanda and I shared the modestly larger  bunk last night which means we got the window.
Bruce got to pretend he was a sub sailor, low overhang and all.
Tonight we will swap since we both want to make sure to to get the full Adventure Experience.

We got into Chicago at just shy of 9 AM this morning after hearing horror stories from our fellow travelers about the thieves in the Chicago Train Station. So we checked our luggage with an attendent, one of the perks of being sleeper car travellers, and went off to explore Chicago Grand Central.

Surpassed in craftsmanship only by New York Cities Grand Central.
This old station has been host to the rich and famous for many years.
Most recently you may remember these stair from the movie
The Untouchables.

You can almost hear that baby carriage dropping, step
by step, by step.

Sometimes you can even feel the long gone spirits of former travelers.

Humphrey Bogart maybe?

Stopped in here for a quick sandwich and then back to our exclusive Amtrak people how have reserved  sleeper cars tickets, lounge.

It sure did fill up while we were gone. Wanda isn't pleased with the lack of exclusivity.

Back on the train heading to Salt Lake City. This is the big one. 34 1/2 hours.
And the sleeperette in daytime mode is as cozy as a little cocoon.

Can't wait to go thru the Rocky Mountains tomorrow...

  1. Hi Wanda,

If you're going through the Rockies at night, fetch yourselves some wine and crackers from the club car, close your compartment door open the blinds on your window, prop your feet up, and enjoy watching the Rockies by moonlight. It was fantastico when we did it years ago... course, we were going the other direction, if that makes a difference.

    Cheers,
    Dave
